Pets in cargo

Our direct routes and minimised touchpoints provide quick and hassle-free travel for pets. With substantial shipping speed, efficiency, and safe handling measures, we ensure that your pet arrives safely at the destination without any delay or discomfort. Our trained staff will closely monitor the condition of your furry friends to ensure they remain properly fed and hydrated.

Besides being a member of the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA), we manage the acceptance and handling of animals based on IATA’s Live Animals Regulations (LAR) and as per carrier regulations. Animals are accepted for shipment only after allocation of space and prior arrangements are confirmed. We also offer priority loading and off-loading for shipping your pets.

Your pets are in safe hands with our team, trained in special handling of animals. When we carry your pets in the cargo hold, optimal temperature range is maintained to ensure a well-ventilated, comfortable journey. We also provide air-conditioned vehicles for the carriage of your pets during ramp transfer. However, restrictions may apply depending on the type of aircraft and routes requested for the shipment.

Restrictions for carriage of pets

  • Pregnant pets are not allowed as cargo to ensure their safety. If your pet has given birth in the last 48 hours, please inform our team.

  • Certain breeds, such as snub-nosed or flat-faced pets, are carried only when temperatures are below 25°C due to risks involved in transporting them in the cargo compartment. Please contact your local office to discuss acceptance.

  • Pet birds listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) cannot be carried as personal cargo.

  • The pets must be at least 3 months or older to travel in the cargo hold.

  • You must carry vaccination and health certificates (duly signed and stamped), validated by the sanitation department, advising that your pet is in good health at least 72 hours before the date of travel.

Yes, the container for pet transport must be comfortable and spacious enough for the pet to be able to stay even for a prolonged duration. The pet cage must be securely equipped to prevent unauthorised access, and accidental opening of the door either from inside or outside. Also, ventilation apertures should be small enough to ensure that no part of the animal protrudes outside of the container. Please refer to IATA regulations for more details on the specifications of pet containers for transport.

You can ship most domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and birds as pet cargo on Air India. However, we do not carry pet bird species that are listed as restricted under CITES.
We also place strict restrictions regarding the carriage of snub-nosed pets as these breeds are susceptible to breathing problems due to their shorter snouts. Therefore, we only accept such pets to travel as cargo if the temperature is below 25° C. For further clarification and other restrictions and approvals, please get in touch with us at - cargocare@airindia.com.
